Four Tips to Help Keep Your Home as Bug-free as Possible

According to the Smithsonian Institution, at any given time there are at least 10 quintillion — that’s a 1 with 19 zeroes behind it — insects alive in the world. Given this astonishing number, it’s no surprise that you will find a few crickets, ants, ladybugs and roaches in your house from time to time.
Of course, while you understand that some bugs are common, you don’t necessarily want them to set up house in your kitchen or bedroom. The same goes for other pests like mice or rats. Fortunately, with a little vigilance on your part, it is pretty easy to keep pests outside. Check out the following ideas to keep your house as bug and pest-free as possible:

Keep Wood Piles Away from Your Home

Many kinds of bugs and small animals love to hide in dark areas like wood piles. As Angie’s List notes, if you heat your home with wood, keep your supply of firewood as far from your home as you can. Pests also like to nest in debris like leaves and mulch; so try to clean up fallen leaves sooner rather than later and don’t pile a lot of mulch or soil around the foundation of your home.

Keep Your Kitchen Extra Clean

With kids, keeping the house tidy can be a challenge, but try to at least keep the kitchen as clean as possible. Clean food crumbs and juice spills from the counters and floors, and aim to do the dishes every other night. Shake out the toaster regularly to remove crumbs, and make sure you have a garbage pail with a secure lid. The less food you provide for insects and other critters, the less likely they will be to visit.

Hire an Exterminator

If you have found a trail of ants parading through your kitchen or a cockroach or two in the bathroom, it might be a good idea to call in a professional for help. Unfortunately, for every insect you see, there are usually a bunch more hiding in your home that you cannot, so hiring a trusted and reliable animal and pest control service is often a good idea. In addition to spraying for insects and other critters, the exterminator can check your home for areas where pests are entering — for example, cracks in the foundation or doors or windows that are not properly sealed. In many cases, the exterminator can seal up these holes and other entrance spots. Mention that you have small kids and pets to be sure they use something that is as safe as possible for your family. You can hire a company one time or set up a regular service plan.

Eliminate Water Sources

Some pests, like mosquitoes, will breed in water, and all bugs and critters need water to survive. Make sure you are not accidentally providing plenty of it to creepy crawlies by avoiding leaving dishes and standing water in your sink. Then hunt for other, less-obvious sources. For example, check under every sink for leaky pipes and head outside to look for standing water in garden buckets, wading pools filled with rainwater and other places.

Born In China Everywhere April 21st!

Narrated by John Krasinski, Disneynature's new True Life Adventure film “Born In China” takes an epic journey into the wilds of China where few people have ever ventured. Following the stories of three animal families, the film transports audiences to some of the most extreme environments on Earth to witness some of the most intimate moments ever captured in a nature film. A doting panda bear mother guides her growing baby as she begins to explore and seek independence. A two-year-old golden monkey who feels displaced by his new baby sister joins up with a group of free-spirited outcasts. And a mother snow leopard - an elusive animal rarely caught on camera - faces the very real drama of raising her two cubs in one of the harshest and most unforgiving environments on the planet. Featuring stunning, never-before-seen imagery, the film navigates China’s vast terrain - from the frigid mountains to the heart of the bamboo forest - on the wings of red-crowned cranes, seamlessly tying the extraordinary tales together. Opening in U.S. theaters on Earth Day 2017, “Born in China” is directed by accomplished Chinese filmmaker Lu Chuan, and produced by Disney’s Roy Conli and renowned nature filmmakers Brian Leith and Phil Chapman.
· “Born in China” is the seventh theatrical release for Disneynature, the first new Disney-branded film label from The Walt Disney Studios in more than 60 years. The label was launched in April 2008 to bring the world’s top nature filmmakers together to capture a variety of wildlife subjects and stories.
· The first six big-screen releases under the Disneynature label - “Earth,” “Oceans,” “African Cats,” “Bears,” “Monkey Kingdom” and “Chimpanzee” - are among the top seven highest grossing feature-length nature films of all time.
· Walt Disney was a pioneer in wildlife documentary filmmaking, producing 13 True Life Adventure motion pictures between 1948 and 1960, including “Seal Island” (1948), “Beaver Valley” (1950), “The Living Desert” (1953) and “Jungle Cat” (1958). The films earned eight Academy Awards.

Exploring Easter Gifts That Will Thrill Every Family Member

Spring and Easter are times when people celebrate the warming of the season and their faith with one major holiday. During Easter, children are often thrilled to receive candy and seek out refillable eggs in their backyards. The spirit of the season is typically visualized in basket gifts traded between parties. Explore these Easter gift ideas for your next family gathering. There's more to top Easter gift baskets than just shredded grass and chocolate bars.

Going For The Eggs
In the past, you bought dozens of eggs to color and hide in the backyard. Because wasted food is frowned upon today, turn to more eco-friendly egg hunts. Purchasing refillable eggs means that you can use them each year. Pick eggs that come in a variety of different colors and styles. Buy candy in bulk bags, fill the eggs yourself and hide them around your property. Children still hunt for the eggs, but they'll simply empty them into their baskets. They're left with lots of candy while you can store the plastic eggs for next year's festivities.

The Chocolate-Bunny Surprise
A treat that's often the pinnacle of the Easter celebration is the chocolate bunny. These candies come in a variety of sizes. You might buy a bunny that's one or two feet long so that the kids can admire the huge treat before them. You'll also have a choice of either hollow or solid bunnies. The hollow bunnies will be more affordable, whereas the solid products are more luxurious prices. Consider the impact that you want to make on your family so that your choice becomes clear.

Quintessential Gift Baskets
Walk around any store or browse online, and you'll find every prepackaged gift basket ever imagined. Shop businesses that dedicate themselves to these baskets, such as Each design can be matched to the person's personality. Children, men and women will appreciate a basket with favorite candies, stuffed animals and cookies organized into an attractive array. Ideally, pick several baskets to buy well ahead of the Easter weekend. The popular ones can sell out very quickly. They'll normally store well for a few weeks as long as cool and dry conditions persist.

Creating Your Own Spring Baskets
It's possible to buy your basket supplies separately so that your shopping creates unique gifts on Easter Sunday. Buy baskets in large quantities to receive a good discount. Bags of grass and other filler are also inexpensive. Use your good judgement about candies and alternative treats within the gifts. You can opt for a healthy basket or one that's full of small, stuffed animals. These designs are entirely yours to develop as Easter day arrives. Cover the completed baskets in cellophane. You don't want any items accidentally falling from the collection.

Alternative Gifts For Adults
The children may be happy with chocolate and stuffed bunnies, but look out for the adult interests too. Fill a personalized basket with cheese, cured meats and crackers. Try a wine basket as an Easter gift too. Simply focus on your loved ones' interests in order to guide your purchasing process. A basket filled with books, yarn and other items might be a better choice for an older adult. With your mind focused on appropriate gifts, you'll be able to thrill everyone on Easter.

Consider Religious Tokens
Easter is a Christian celebration so it's not unheard of to add religious items to a gift basket. Crucifixes on necklaces or bracelets might be attractive. Small bibles placed among the basket grass are also smart touches. Children might be learning about Easter and its place in the Bible. Booklets focusing on the Easter holiday are important items between the fun toys and candies. Adults also appreciate religious tokens, including quotes from the Bible and other details. Easter is designed to bring everyone together, and thoughtful gifts perform this duty for you and the entire family.

Easter's date changes each year so keep up with the holidays. In many cases, you'll be able to stock up on candy and goodies several weeks before the date. Start your shopping early, and you'll be able to hand out unique gifts that thrill everyone in your household.

Islands In The Kitchen

A kitchen island is an idea for you to install if you enjoy cooking or if you simply need more space in the room. When you begin the kitchen island installation process, you need to look at the size of the space that you have to work with and the size of the island as there are some designs that don't work well in small areas. There are several design ideas that you can utilize in the home depending on the function that you want from the unit.

For a lighter atmosphere, consider a kitchen island that is blue with silver or white accents. Blue often matches most kitchens. However, if there is another color on the walls, then you can paint the island to match. Place bar stools around the island that are silver in color instead of wood. A blond kitchen island can make the room seem much larger than it is, which is ideal for apartments or smaller homes. A black counter gives a modern look to the island. You can also add a marble or granite top to the island. This works well if you plan on doing a lot of food preparation as the surface will hold up better to cutting and the heat from pots and pans. A wooden kitchen island usually works in most kitchens because of the neutral color.

If you're looking for additional storage in the kitchen, then leave the bottom of the island open instead of enclosed. This design will give you the shelving that is needed for cooking utensils or plates and bowls that you use on a regular basis. White islands work well in a dark kitchen or one that has a lot of wood accents. The white color seems to brighten the space, making it refreshing. White is a good color for homes that are located on the beach as it contrasts well with the sand and nautical decorations. If the kitchen is larger, then you might want to consider an elegant design with detailed legs and drawers for the island that is installed in the kitchen area.
