Choosing a Safe, Economical Car for Your Graduate

As a parent, your child’s safety is of the utmost importance. When they are kids, you are better able to control their environment and, therefore, safety. But as they get older, the worry grows as they go off to school, go to friends’ houses, go on dates, start driving and (gasp!) graduate from high school.

As your teen gets ready for the next stage in his life, you can ensure he is equipped with a vehicle that will keep him as safe as possible. Here is a roundup of expert tips and advice to help you keep your graduate as safe as possible on the road — without breaking the bank.

Do's and Don’ts

For teen drivers, it’s important to find a vehicle that is safe. But what is the best way to do that? Listen to those who know.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) suggests that young, inexperienced drivers should steer clear of vehicles with high horsepower, as the power in the engine can lead to reckless driving. The experts also say that larger, heavier cars are generally safer as they offer better protection in the event of a car accident. Further, statistics show that teens are less inclined to get in an accident in larger cars like SUVs.

Cars with the highest safety ratings are the safest bet (four- or five-star rating) for young drivers. And cars with electronic stability control are all but a necessity, as the feature helps drivers keep the car under control on icy roadways. The IIHS also offers a list of best used vehicles for young people. The list offers cars under $20,000 with four- or five-star ratings by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Tips of the trade

Finding a quality vehicle for the best price can be challenging. However, tried and true tips from the experts can help.

According to Bankrate.com, it is key to know your budget if you are planning on purchasing a car in 2016. While this may seem obvious, the experts suggest that you don’t spend more than a quarter of your monthly income on all of your household’s vehicles. This should include, they say, not only your payment, but gas and the cost to insure your car.

In addition, when considering purchasing a used car for your graduate, prices can vary substantially depending on the geographical location you buy it from. Some locales simply offer more affordability. Therefore, your local car dealer may not be the best option. Searching within cities that have the best used car market is a smart move, including Miami, New York City and Cleveland, which offer the high value.

On DriveTime.com, you can easily research and purchase used cars in a variety of areas. You can also search over 8,000 used vehicles from 100 dealerships across the nation, read reviews and get approval online quickly. This can make your car search quick and painless.

Above all, safety, affordability and longevity are all key when purchasing a car, especially for your teen. The car you ultimately end up buying is much more than helping him get from point A to point B. It is your peace of mind in knowing your child is as safe as possible on the road they travel.

PBS Kids Series Arthur Explores Childhood Challenges

Produced by WGBH, the Emmy Award-winning PBS Kids series Arthur explores childhood challenges with heart and humor while promoting friendship, family, and pro-social skills. This spring, viewers will join Arthur and friends as they celebrate Autism Awareness Month and Month of the Military Child on-air and online. A new family history game also launched recently on Arthur's popular website. It all begins the week of April 4th on PBS Kids (check local listings). Viewers will celebrate National Autism Awareness Month with new and fan favorite episodes featuring Carl, Arthur's friend with autism. In one of the new stories, George enlists Carl's musical talents for his upcoming puppet show. However, Carl's routines are getting in the way of their rehearsals. Should George keep working with Carl and risk the show? Or replace Carl and risk his friendship? In addition to the broadcast, fans can enjoy select episodes and clips on pbskids.org and on the PBS Kids Video App, which is available on a variety of mobile devices and on platforms such as Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Xbox One, and Chromecast, throughout the month of April.
Also in April, Arthur honors military-connected children with online episodes and a social media campaign featuring Ladonna, a character whose dad is in the Army Corps of Engineers. Full episodes and clips of Ladonna will be available on pbskids.org and the PBS Kids Video App, centered around the 2016 Month of the Military Child theme: "Grit. Determination. Perseverance. Military Kids: Tomorrow's Trailblazers." In addition to learning about military families, kids can explore their own family heritage through the recently launched Arthur Family History Fun interactive game. Family History Fun provides kids with a simple and fun way to interview relatives about their own childhoods and memories of growing up. These one-page interviews-printed or saved to a mobile device's photo gallery are a creative and meaningful keepsake for families. For its efforts in helping to teach children empathy and understanding, Arthur was recently honored with the 2015 Humanitas Prize for Children's Animation. "With its warmth, humor and social-emotional curriculum, Arthur helps kids develop critical skills-from compassion to perseverance," said Carol Greenwald, Senior Executive Producer of Arthur. "We hope Arthur and his friends can inspire kids of all backgrounds, as well as teach them how to better support one another."

The Jungle Book Special Photo Shoot

A brand new special shoot images featuring the cast of Disney’s The Jungle Book are now available. Featuring Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Lupita Nyong’o, Sir Ben Kingsley, Christopher Walken, and Giancarlo Esposito, each image pairs the actor with their onscreen character, as well as quotes from the actors.
Scarlett Johansson/Kaa
Kaa is a massive python who uses her voice and hypnotic gaze to entrance Mowgli. The man-cub can't resist her captivating embrace. "Kaa seduces and entraps Mowgli with her storytelling," says Scarlett Johansson. "She's the mirror into Mowgli's past. The way she moves is very alluring, almost coquettish."
Idris Elba/Shere Khan
Voiced by Idris Elba, Shere Khan bears the scars of man, which fuel his hatred of humans. Convinced that Mowgli poses a threat, the bengal tiger is determined to rid the jungle of the man-cub. "Shere Khan reigns with fear," says Elba. "He terrorizes everyone he encounters because he comes from a place of fear."
Sir Ben Kingsley/Bagheera
Bagheera is a sleek panther who feels it's his duty to help the man-cub depart with dignity when it's time for him to leave his jungle home. "Bagheera is Mowgli’s adoptive parent," says Ben Kingsley, who lends his voice to Bagheera. "His role in Mowgli’s life is to educate, to protect and to guide. My Bagheera was military - he’s probably a colonel. He is instantly recognizable by the way he talks, how he acts and what his ethical code is.”
Lupita Nyong'o/Raksha
Lupita Nyong'o voices Raksha, a mother wolf who cares deeply for all of her pups - including man-cub Mowgli, whom she adopts as one of her own when he's abandoned in the jungle as an infant. "She is the protector, the eternal mother," says Nyong'o. "The word Raksha actually means protection in Hindi. I felt really connected to that, wanting to protect a son that isn’t originally hers but one she’s taken for her own."
Christopher Walken/King Louie
King Louie is a formidable ape who desperately wants the secret of Man's deadly "red flower” - fire. He's convinced Mowgli has the information he seeks. "King Louie is huge - 12 feet tall," says Christopher Walken, who voices the character. "But he's as charming as he is intimidating when he wants to be.”
Giancarlo Esposito/Akela
Akela is the strong and hardened alpha-male wolf who shoulders the responsibility of his pack. He welcomes Mowgli to the family, but worries he may one day compromise their safety. "Akela is a fierce patriarch of the wolf pack," says Giancarlo Esposito, who voices the character. "He believes the strength of the pack lies in what each and every wolf offers. He's a great leader, a wise teacher."
