The bakery was packed. Jason Kolb blinked at the lines. Some of the people at the counter were shouting. Some of the people who hadn’t reached the counter yet were shouting, which was annoying most of the other waiting customers. He turned to look at the woman next to him. "Is this really necessary?" "Yep!" Sadie chirped. She was marrying his friend Delbert in a week, and Jason squinted at how chipper she was. It was six o’clock in the morning but you’d never know it by looking at her. "Are you sure? I’m not used to getting up this early." Jason, on the other hand, knew he probably looked like a bear woken from hibernation a month too soon. But Sadie laughed happily and didn't take offense. "Of course it is! After eight all the cinnamon rolls are usually gone and you've got to have one of Sweet Favors’s cinnamon rolls." She stood on tiptoe to try to peer around the crowds. "It’s not usually this crowded, though." "Must be because of Valentine’s Day," Jason muttered. He noticed that the cashier's patience was visibly fraying in the face of the crowds.

Suddenly the door to the back swung open and a lovely woman in a crisp white apron with her auburn hair pulled neatly back burst through carrying a huge paper-lined tray. From the traces of flour and icing on her apron Jason assumed she was the baker. She moved gracefully under the tray, eyes sparkling. Jason thought they were blue... and then wondered why it mattered so much. Maybe it was the tray full of pastry. At this time of morning anyone looked better carrying sugar. "Who wants bear claws?" she called over the crowd cheerfully, a huge smile on her face. "Show of hands!" Hands shot up all over the bakery. "One line, ladies and gentlemen, just for bear claws, people with exact change in front please!" The cashier looked confused, and the pretty woman in the apron and jeans grinned at her, full of playful challenge. Jason blinked. It’s not just the pastries, he admitted to himself. It was the baker herself who was so enchanting...
