Orange Picnic by Deborah Chamberlain
About The Book:
In the heart of middle America and the shadow of turbulent times, Orange Picnic is a sweet reminder of the 1960s and a story for the ages. Set in Homewood, Illinois, Orange Picnic follows two teenage couples whose lives intersect as they fall in love to the drumbeat of the Vietnam War. From corner coffee shops to skipping school to the lyrics of Dylan and Donovan, the rush of romance ignites the teenager in all of us, but it is the shock of unexplained loss that awakens the adult. It takes a lifetime to learn that love never dies and youth never should.
My Thoughts:
I know I have said before on this blog that I love the 60's era. So you know automatically I would be into reading this book. But I was took unawares when I fell in love with this book. Maybe it is the love-story, maybe it is my military connections, or maybe something else. I read this book in two hours flat. Not because it was a short easy read but because it was so engaging that I kept turning page after page until reaching page 192, the end. Grab a tissue, or two, and read this book!
About The Author:
Deborah (Donaldson) Chamberlain began her writing career when she was in seventh grade, crafting improbable chapters about unexpectedly meeting, along with her friends, the musical group The Beatles, who, of course, fell madly in love with naive school girls from another country. If someone asks Deborah about those stories, it will surely bring a smile as she remembers how silly those writings were, but she'll also mention that it was rather gratifying when friends waited breathlessly for her to finish the next chapter. The writing bug bit again after Deborah was selected to be one of a group of annual Community Columnists for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Even though not all of the reader comments were supportive, most were. It was a thrill to have one of her columns read aloud by one of the on-air talents, to a wide and diverse audience on radio station WTMJ-AM. But one of the most enjoyable writing assignments was her contribution to Confessions of Shameless Dating when Deborah recounted how she and her sister were able to wrangle Free Drinks All Night. Deborah's professional career has involved her in marketing, advertising and public relations, leading her to start her own firm, Donaldson Media & Marketing Services, LLC. Deborah earned a Masters of Arts degree in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. While in graduate school, Deborah was also a teaching assistant for the chairman of the Mass Communications department. After a few years gaining experience in the advertising industry, she taught classes in media, principles of advertising and consumer behavior, part-time for several other universities. The mother of a graduate from the Northwestern University School of Communications, Deborah watched her daughter mirror her footsteps when Becca wrote a press release for her high school's Box Out fund-raiser. To Deborah's chagrin, the Associated Press picked up Becca's article, while Deborah has yet to break into that honored group. And, while thinking about those early Beatles stories is embarrassing, Deborah still hopes to one day meet Paul McCartney so she can apologize to him in-person for those silly love stories.
