Types Of Lung Cancer You Might Need To Know

Lung cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the lungs. It develops when cancer cells start to grow out of control in the lungs. Most types of lung cancer are in the lungs, while other but rarer types can occur on the lungs and chest walls. There are two main types of Lung Cancer Newport Beach-based that might be important for you to know.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 80% to 85% of lung cancers are non-small cell lung cancers. The main subtypes of this lung cancer are large cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. These subtypes are different in terms of where the cancer cells start, but they are typically grouped since their prognosis and treatment are similar.

Adenocarcinoma begins in the cells that secrete substances like mucus. It occurs in current or former smokers. It is seen to be common in women than in men. Large cell carcinoma is likely to appear in any part of the lungs. It grows and spreads fast. This makes it difficult to treat or manage it. Squamous cell carcinoma begins in squamous cells. These are flat cells inside of the lungs’ airways. This type of lung cancer is common to smokers.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)

Records show that nearly 10% to 15% of all lung cancers are likely to be small cell lung cancer. This type is also known as oat cell cancer. Unfortunately, SCLC tends to have faster growth and spreading rate than the NSCLC. The American Cancer Society statistics show that approximately 70% of individuals with SCLC are diagnosed while cancer has already spread.

SCLC tends to respond effectively to radiation therapies as well as chemotherapies. Regrettably, many patients with SCLC tend to return for treatment at some point. However, there are lung carcinoid tumors which are rare. They account for fewer than 5% of all lung tumors and are associated with slow growth.
