National Nurses Day is May 6th

During this time, healthcare workers are in the spotlight. And that is how it should be. And though the term "healthcare worker" covers a great many job positions, I would like to highlight nurses. And tomorrow is their day - National Nurses Day.

I can't really speak for the situation currently, because I have not been sick nor have I known anyone in need of care in a hospital during this time. But there was a time when nurses were all my family saw for about 4 days straight. And it was a sad time for us, as that was when our Mason was passing away. But in that short time, we made such connections with the nurses, who were strangers to us. But they quickly became what felt like family. They were by our sides more than the doctors were and answering questions and taking care of not only Mason, but the rest of us as well. A few of them even would stay with us after their shifts were over. And many of them took great care and compassion with Callan as well.

Months later, we ran into one of nurses who cared for Mason and she just started crying and hugged us. She told us that our son was the defining case thus far in her nursing career and she would never forget him, or us. Though all of this was in 2011, it still makes me appreciate those women, and they helped shape who I would become in my career as a CNA.

So today, tomorrow, or 5 years from now, be kind to your nurses, because they give up their family time, and so much more, to be with you and yours. And many times it goes unappreciated.

  8. Nurses are so important. It's sad to see how (at least in Ontario) the government has been treating them. Our health care systems wouldn't be the same without them.

  9. Nurses are the most trusted healthcare professionals. They are with patients throughout the continuum of life. Nurses are teacher, advocates, caregivers, critical thinkers and innovators. They do so much more than care for individuals; their presence 24/7 has transformed lives.
    Happy Nurses Day..
