In light of all the recent “Straight Outta ______” memes, what better choice for an infographic than one detailing the entrepreneurial empires of each of the surviving members of N.W.A. It’s no secret N.W.A. was one of the most influential and commercially successful rap groups in the history of hip-hop. Not only did they revolutionize rap music, but they created a launch pad for the West Coast rap scene unlike any before them. They rapped about the struggles of living in the slums of Compton, and all the drugs, crime, and anger that came along with it. They didn’t care about who they were offending, they were just speaking the truth of their lives.
Since taking the L.A. hip-hop scene by storm in 1986, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, and DJ Yella have all done pretty well for themselves (some better than others – RIP Eazy-E!). As many know, Dr. Dre owns and operates multi-million dollar headphone company, Beats, while Ice Cube has made quite the name for himself in Hollywood (for better or worse). What some might not know though, is that DJ Yella has generated quite the storm in the American pornography industry, while MC Ren has become founder and owner of record label, Villain Entertainment.
