Family Christmas Traditions

Every Christmas whole our big family gets together. Many of my relatives live abroad and Christmas is a good excuse to get everyone from all the little corner of the Earth. The children with my husband decorate the Christmas tree, women cook in the kitchen. No Christmas Eve passes without viewing "Home Alone" and other good old Christmas movies. In our family there are two types of gifts accepted - one big gift from each family and a small gift from each person (not more than 20 dollars). Children make gifts with their own hands: cookies, cards, crafts. Tell you a secret, these are the most precious gifts to me. In the end, everyone gets and gives a lot of gifts and it takes almost a whole evening!

Then we all sit at the table and begin to celebrate. Christmas is often the only opportunity to see many native people and we always have something to talk about. Also we have one great tradition: one of our neighbors knocks on the door and laughs out loud "Ho, ho, ho". All the children and some parents run to the door, thinking that it is Santa. At this time my husband and I put the presents under the Christmas tree. Then everybody comes back and, oh miracle, tons of gifts under the tree! Husband usually entertains children playing with them in different games, sledding, comes up with different classes. Also he has one inalienable tradition - to read 'The Night Before Christmas' to the children before they go to sleep.

And, of course, every year they leave a glass of milk and cookies for Santa. Also my kids get their pictures taken with the Santa at the mall every year and all of the pictures are displayed in special frames that only come out at Christmas time. One my friends has a great tradition she told me about recently. She puts up the nativity set in its' place, except for the baby Jesus. He's across the room and they move him a little closer every day, putting him in the manger on Christmas morning before the gifts are opened. I think it's a great and creative idea. And what traditions have you in your families? Merry Christmas to all!
