The Secret Room by Beth Kanell
About The Book:
Shawna and Thea are working together on a math project for their eighth-grade class. But the numbers don't add up, and they make a startling discovery: a secret room in the basement of Thea's house, an old Vermont inn. The code on the walls makes the girls and everyone in town wonder why there was a secret room. Was it part of the Underground Railroad, or perhaps something less, well, heroic? Discovering the truth is harder than they would have thought, especially when the truth is not what some people want to hear. From the author of Darkness Under the Water, Beth Kanell's new novel is written for young adults ages 10 and up.
My Thoughts:
This book is very interesting. An old-fashioned story fully of mystery and history! I was hooked from the beginning. and I am not a 10 year old girl. I think many adults would enjoy this read as well, especially for the history behind it. The story is beautifully written and the characters are vividly brought to life. A very good read!
About The Author:
I'm passionate about Vermont - it's people, communities, landscape, history. And I'm writing "young adult" novels that root in all of those. Please do check on current projects at http://bethkanell.blogspot.com. Vermont summer is full of brilliant greens and blues, with splashes of yellow and hot pink and red. In May and early June the scent of lilacs sets my mind spinning, remembering old loves, treasuring today's, and wondering about what's over the next ridge. When I was out walking the other day, I heard a sudden thump in the woods to my left, and froze in place - a moment later, a doe and a yearling, their gray-brown coats damp and ruffled as if they'd just woken up, crossed in front of me. The mama deer kept going; her youngster stopped to look at me, head to one side, ears erect. The moment lingered, until at last the young one seemed to realize that mama must be far, far ahead, and ran after her.

Hi Hayley, I'm so glad you enjoyed reading "The Secret Room." You're right, I wrote it for "us" grownups as well as for the middle schoolers. We still have those girls that we used to be, in our hearts and our dreams. (Guys are welcome to read this, too -- and let me know how they would have solved the mysteries sooner or differently!)
ReplyDeleteNow I'll be thinking also of your two boys -- Callan, the one you can hug today, and Mason, whose hugs are always present in your heart.
