In Search Of Fatherhood

In Search Of Fatherhood by Kevin Renner

About The Book:
What do you do if you suddenly realize you haven't been the sort of father you want to be? What do you do if you don't know how to change course, be a better father, be the father your pre-teen daughters need and want? Faced with these questions, author Kevin Renner interviewed fifty adult women from around the world to learn the many ways in which their fathers-good, bad, and in-between had affected their lives. Young and old, rich and poor, well known and anonymous, these women became guides on the author's journey into fatherhood. These are their stories . . . and his.

My Thoughts:
This book is great! I have never had a really close personal relationship with my own father, though it has gotten better as I have gotten older. I never ever really thought much of my relationship with my dad, or with my step-dad, but I often think of my husband's relationship with our son and talk to him often about it. I think a father, or father-figure, really defines who we are as people in the long run. This book, with the stories from moms/daughters and the author's as a father, are eye opening and inspiring.

About The Author:
Marketing executive Kevin Renner woke up one day, and realizing it was Monday and that he had to go to work, he blurted out while still half asleep, "Oh, f_@%*!" His second thought was the awareness: "This is the end of my life as a corporate guy." And it was. Three months later, he was done as the global marketing director for a large technology company. But, that literal wake-up call didn't end with a career change. He realized that he didn't know his daughters very well, and at ages nine and thirteen, they would be off to high school, to college, and to their own lives within a few short years. When Renner realized he hadn't really been as good a father as he'd once believed, he began to wonder: "What does a good father look like? What do I have left to teach my daughters in the short time that remains? And what will they long for in adulthood that they haven't gotten from me in their youth?" When no good answers came to mind, he decided to find out. To better understand fatherhood from the vantage point of daughters, he interviewed fifty women from around the world for his book In Search of Fatherhood: A Mother Lode of Wisdom from the World of Daughterhood. In the weeks since his book's release, Renner has appeared on dozens of major market radio and television programs around the country, including NBC, Fox, and ABC Television and radio affiliates around the country, as well as The Oprah Winfrey Radio Network and NPR Chicago. He speaks widely now on fatherhood, daughterhood, and the emerging role of women. A former journalist, Renner has his MBA from the University of California-Berkeley, and a B.A. in social sciences from UC-Santa Cruz. Kevin Renner blogs at www.kevin-renner.com.
