Moms Around The World Series

I am hoping to start a series on my blog called Moms Around The World. I got the idea the other day while at the doctor with Mason for his 15 month Well Child. We were in the waiting area and an Asian family came in, a pregnant mom, a dad, and a son, about 4 years old. The mom sat her pregnant self down in the one if the kiddie chairs while her son played next to Mason. The boy kept telling Mason "No" and saying "Mine." The mom, speaking in whatever language they spoke in, was obviously telling her son to knock it off, to be nice. Mason knocked over one of the wooden toy puzzles and said "Oh no!" (Ok, he really said "Oh Sh*t", yes, I am a potty mouthed mama). Mason looked at me, then looked at her. She waved her hand dismissively at the fallen puzzle and said to Mason, "It's okay, no problem." He just kept looking at her for a minute, and then took a few steps towards me. Then he looked back at her and she smiled, and he went back to playing, deciding she was okay. The whole scene just made me think that no matter what race we are, what culture we come from, what language we speak - moms are the same. I could totally see this same scenario happening in France, Spain, South Africa, and Iran. Kids are the same, and so too, are mothers. But I am curious to know about the differences. Or the similarities. What traditions do we teach our children? What morals do we instill in them? Is the African mother teaching her daughter the same things a Canadian mother does? Is the Japanese mother teaching her son the same values as an Italian mother? What do you think? Send me your guest posts to callansmama@yahoo.com
