Why is it that with the approach of Valentine’s Day we either turn into evil you-know-whats or mushballs? All it takes is the mention of the “holiday” and suddenly we are deep in thought about our significant others and placing all sorts of meaning on this one tiny day. The only conclusion I can come up with is as little girls, we were hand fed fairy tales and Disney stories galore. So now, even being older and wiser and some of us having caught an amazing man….Valentine’s Day turns us into idiots.
The expectation that our honey will suddenly turn into Prince Charming for just the one day and then the disappointment when he comes home and asks for a beer, instead of forking over that bling you’ve been eyeing at the mall (yet didn’t tell him cause come on… he should KNOW you want it naturally!) Ah Fairy Tales, I am such a sucker for them, so much so that I still dream of being in love in a movie.
…and yet, life is not a fairy tale. It’s more like those novels you read where you laugh, cry, hate the heroine and root for her at the same time. We are human. We get stressed, depressed, anxious, and the men in our lives are a far cry from “Prince Charming.” (for a good laugh or two make yourself feel better about your dating foibles, check out:: Men Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3).
Personally, my life, however crazy it may be, is real and mine. Yes I may still be kissing frogs and escaping some witch (although if someone wanted to put me to sleep for awhile, hey, I would be a-ok with it, I need a good sleep!) but I like reality.
Most of the time anyway.
This is what happens when the fairy tales ends and a future begins.
So ladies, your man may not be perfect. He may give you a blender instead of a necklace or think your birthday weeks away when it’s really today, cut him some slack and remember, he’s not a Prince…but he wakes up to you every morning, kissing you with your morning breath, smiles and nods at your crazy moments, agrees with you just to make you feel ok when it’s that time of the month, calls you out when you are being stupid and teases you about it, sees you sans make up while totally sleep deprived and still thinks to himself that he is the lucky one?
Prince Charming ain’t got nothing on him.
