The Enviable Traits Of A Filipina Mother

The Philippines has a rich culture and heritage. This comes from the many explorers who have stayed and settled in the country during its early years. A Filipino breed is a mixture of Asian and Western blood having influenced by other Asians like the Malays and Hindus. The Philippines’ culture and traditions were greatly influenced by the Spaniards having been under its rule for more than 300 years. The Americans also had a great influence on the lives of the Filipinos.

With the combination of Asian and Western Culture, the Filipinos have created their own values and traditions carried on by the people until these modern times. The family is regarded as the most important unit in the society where the husband and wife play different but equally important role and with one goal – to have children of their own and provide for them with all their needs and assure them of a bright future.

The father is considered the pillar of the family, the provider of all their needs. The mother and the children draw their strength from him while the wife is the one expected to take good care of the children. She is regarded as “ilaw ng tahanan” or the one that brings light to the home. She is the one who looks after their needs and make sure that everything is alright. The following are some basic traits of a Filipina mother:

1. Her priority is her family. Even in these modern times, where Filipinas are also working to earn a living for her family, she always finds time to provide and attend to the needs of her children.

2. She is brought up to or conditioned to manage and run the family household. She is the one in charge of what food she is going to cook for her family and look after the needs of her children in school.

3. She is ready to sacrifice everything for the welfare of her family. In today’s hard times, many Filipina mothers go overseas to be able to earn well to provide for the family.

4. In a not so affluent family, she tries very hard to make both ends meet; she makes sure that the family income would be spent on the basic necessities. Not even for several coins would she spend for her needs alone when the budget is tight.

5. One most admirable trait of a Filipina mother is her ability to stick to her husband even when he is philandering or with bad habits like gambling and drinking. She sacrifices her personal happiness just to keep the family intact with the welfare of her children in her mind, for them not to grow up in a broken home.

These basic characteristics of a Filipina can still be said of the modern Filipinas today. The Filipinos are reared to have high regard for their family that in every situation, the family always comes first.
