MN Zoo Penguins

We went to the Minnesota Zoo today and saw the new penguin exhibit. We are members of the zoo, and we go often, and we've been waiting to see the penguins all year! The exhibit opened in early July. And it is worth seeing!

3M Penguins of the African Coast – Exhibit Highlights:
  • 2,000 square foot exhibit
  • 7’ deep pool (15,000 gallons of water)
  • Beach and cliffs for nesting; built-in nest boxes for sleeping and breeding
  • Over 40 feet of viewing, above and below water, through clear acrylic
  • Classroom view into penguins
  • Just for kids: rock and compacted sand formation allowing them a nose-to nose experience with the penguins, touchable bronze models, and penguin eggs will be part of the rock formation
  • A sound system conveying the penguins’ "braying" sound
  • Daily narrated zookeeper feeding demonstrations
  • Two-story realistic landscape mural, highly-detailed rock formations with simulated sea life including shellfish and kelp, creating a replica of South Africa's Boulders Beach, one of the penguins' most famous natural habitats
Here are a few pics of our adventures there, though some are not the best pics, because this exhibit was packed! Everyone was excited to see the penguins!

The spiky haired kid is mine! Hee hee.
Little Mason wanted to get in on the action.

I just love penguins. Probably because penguins mate for life! Love that. One penguin for the other. Plus they are just so darn cute!
